When Crisis Becomes Clarity

A cautionary tale that became a comeback. 

A nonprofit organization with an annual budget of $13.5 million had built its work over 25 years on a foundation of consistent federal funding, reliable programs, and steady community support. Then, almost overnight, they lost $6.4 million in contracts. 

What the crisis exposed was significant — policy gaps, missing contingency plans, absent community partnerships, and long-term liabilities with no funding source. An organization that had operated with confidence for a quarter century suddenly had no roadmap. 

Randy came in as an objective, mindful partner. Over four months he worked with the board to identify and prioritize decisions in a structured, values-based way. He worked with leadership teams to honestly assess themselves and their staff, leading to a thoughtful, values-driven downsizing that honored the people involved while meeting the new financial reality. And he listened — through community captains — to dozens of the people the organization existed to serve, making sure their voices shaped the path forward. 

What emerged over six months was an organized plan for each team — board, staff, and community — to move through the crisis toward a new and more resilient model. Client-led solutions helped other community organizations fill the gaps left by the funding cuts. Two years later the organization is stable, led by a board focused on business development, and supported by an active leadership team that has built flexibility and strength through deep community partnerships. 

Crisis, met with clarity and courage, became the foundation for something better.
